The Society of Jesus
The Society of Jesus is the largest religious order of the Roman
Catholic Church. Founded in 1540 by Saint Ignatius Loyola, a Spanish
nobleman, the Society now numbers some 25,000 members on six continents
and in 112 nations throughout the world. Among these are 18,000
priests, 3,000 brothers, and 4,000 Jesuits in training for the priesthood.
As religious leaders, Jesuits commit themselves to observe the vows
of poverty, chastity, and obedience. They serve under their General
Superior in Rome who is immediately accountable to the Pope. Jesuit
delegates to a General Congregation from all the Societys
provinces and vice-provinces elect the General Superior of the society,
who serves without limit on his term of office. Top

Ministry of the Exercises
Ignatian spirituality, the vision of the relationship between God
and the human person grounded in the mystical experiences of Saint
Ignatius, has its primary expression in the book Spiritual
Exercises. Twenty-seven retreat houses and spirituality
centers thoughtout the United States provide a variety of services
based on the Spiritual Exercises for clergy, religious, and lay
people, both men and women. Nearly 200 Jesuit priests are engaged
with lay associates full time in directing people through the Spiritual
Exercises. Retreats and spiritual direction are the means by which
Jesuit priests share their spiritual gifts with colleagues and others.
