¡Animate!

Make God-centered decisions: How to make decisions with God’s help?

Just do it! Go for it! Quick! Don’t be afraid, God helps you, so don’t worry.

Sounds easy, doesn’t it? How do you know if you’re making the best decision? How do you know if your decision is what God wants from you?  It is good to be spontaneous and believe in the freedom of the Spirit, but on the other hand, decisions in life require more consideration, discernment, prayer, and consultation, otherwise we will be frustrated people living the results of a poor decision. Here, discernment begins.

In this retreat you will have time to find calm and serenity to discern your decision. You will find time to pray and converse with God and ask Him and above all listen to what He wants from you. Bring your doubts, worries, and fears to the lord, but above all bring an open heart for Him to speak to you and guide you. This retreat will give you concrete tools and practical advice for good discernment and God-centered decisions. Cheer up!
Required material: Bible and daily journal.

This is a silent retreat. Guests are expected to maintain a sacred silence throughout the retreat, including at meals, unless otherwise noted.

Fr.  Alejandro Báez, S.J., was born in Jalisco, Mexico, where he was inspired by the joyfulness of priests and nuns at his local parish. After high school, he immigrated to Southern California and became active at St. Peter’s Italian Church, a parish that serves immigrants, run by the Missionaries of St. Charles-Scalabrinians. The Scalabrinians asked Fr. Báez to discern a vocation to their order, and he began studying at St. John’s College Seminary in Camarillo, California, while serving as music director and director of religious education at St. Peter’s. A vocalist and self-taught organist, saxophonist and pianist, music has always been an important part of Fr. Báez’s life. Although Fr. Báez deeply identified with the Scalabrinians’ charism of helping immigrants, he felt that God was calling him elsewhere, and, after earning a bachelor’s degree in philosophy, he left the seminary and began to discern a vocation to the Jesuits. He entered the Jesuits in 2004 and, as a novice, worked at Dolores Mission School in East Los Angeles, with the Yup’ik people in Chefornak, Alaska, and with a L’Arche community in Spokane, Washington. Missioned to Fordham University in the Bronx, New York, he studied theology for one year before earning a master’s degree in music education from New York University and in conjunction with the Julliard School of Music and while student teaching at William Cullen Bryant High School in Long Island City, New York, and the United Nations International School in New York City. Fr. Báez then taught at Jesuit High School in Sacramento from 2011-2013 and Verbum Dei High School in Los Angeles from 2013-2015 in both the music and theology departments. He was next missioned to the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University in Berkeley, California, where he earned a Master of Divinity degree while serving as a deacon at St. Raymond Catholic Church in Dublin, California. He has sung professionally and with community choirs and has pursued musical training at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and NYU|The Juilliard School. His Jesuit formation has included a summer immersion music program in Venezuela and a two-week walk retracing the steps of St. Ignatius of Loyola from Spain to Rome. After ordination, Fr. Báez worked as Music and Artistic Director of the Choral, Orchestra and Liturgical Program at Bellarmine Preparatory School in Tacoma, WA (2018-2020). He also served as visiting priest at Christ Our Hope Church in Downtown Seattle. His first Masses were celebrated at St. Raymond and St. Peter’s Italian Church. (USA West Province) Fr. Alejandro is the currently the Parochial Vicar at St. Agnes Church in San Francisco, CA. His passion is teaching Liturgy, Ignatian Spirituality, pastoral music, and spiritual direction.
