Ignatian Spirituality
Ignatian spirituality is a practical, everyday way of living in deep relationship with God. Rooted in the life and teachings of St. Ignatius of Loyola, it invites us to seek God in all things — not just in moments of prayer, but throughout the rhythms of daily life. At its heart, Ignatian spirituality is about noticing God’s presence, discerning God’s call, and responding with generosity, freedom, and love.It is a spirituality for busy people in the real world — open to all seekers, across many backgrounds and traditions.
Key Elements of Ignatian Spirituality
Seeking God in All Things
Ignatius taught that God is present and active in every moment — in our work, relationships, joys, struggles, and even in our desires. Living an Ignatian life means cultivating an awareness of God's presence everywhere, not just within the walls of a church.
The Spiritual Exercises
The cornerstone of Ignatian spirituality is the Spiritual Exercises — a set of prayers, meditations, and reflections created by St. Ignatius to deepen one’s personal relationship with God. At Ignatius House, these Exercises form the foundation of many of our silent retreats, offering a way to encounter Christ personally and transform daily life.
Discernment
Discernment is the art of making decisions in harmony with God’s will. It involves prayerful reflection on the movements of the heart — noticing what leads us closer to God (consolation) and what pulls us away (desolation). Ignatian discernment helps guide both small everyday choices and life’s biggest transitions. Learn more about Ignatian Discernment.
The Daily Examen
The Daily Examen is a simple, structured prayer practice to reflect on your day and notice where God was present. By reviewing your experiences each evening, you grow in gratitude, self-awareness, and openness to God’s ongoing work in your life.
A Faith that Does Justice
Ignatian spirituality compels us not just to pray, but to act. It calls us to see the face of Christ in the marginalized, to promote justice, and to work for the healing of our world. This "faith that does justice" is at the core of Jesuit ministries around the globe — and a vital part of the mission of Ignatius House.
