Recovery Retreat: For those in a 12 Step Program

This weekend recovery retreat offers a safe, welcoming space for those in a 12-step program to deepen their spiritual journey through the lens of Ignatian spirituality. Grounded in the shared principles of self-examination, surrender, and spiritual connection, this retreat provides time for reflection, prayer, rest, and fellowship. Guided by experienced retreat directors who understand both the 12-step path and Ignatian tradition, participants will explore how God's grace and the wisdom of the steps can bring healing, freedom, and deeper serenity. Whether you're new to recovery or have been walking this path for years, this retreat invites you to listen deeply, be restored, and reconnect with your Higher Power.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This retreat is not suitable for anyone in acute withdrawal or initial stages of recovery. Please consult a behavioral health hospital. This retreat serves those seeking ongoing motivation for sobriety maintenance.

ABOUT FR. JIM FLEMING SJ, BRAD HAMRLIK AND JULIA MALONEY

Rev. James J. Fleming, SJ is from the USA East Province of the Society of Jesus and has been a Jesuit priest for 25 years. He joined Ignatius House on Aug. 3, 2022 as Spiritual Director and Director of Mission Outreach. Previously, he was the executive director of Campion Conference & Renewal Center in Weston, Ma., and president of Wheeling Jesuit University (WJU). Before joining the leadership team at WJU, Fleming taught at Boston College (BC) and worked as director of mission assessment & planning in the Office of Mission and Ministry at BC, where he led a national research project related to the spiritual development of college students. While at BC, he served as spiritual director for student retreat programs and offered retreats and spiritual direction for faculty and administrators. He trained as a spiritual director at St. Bueno’s in Wales, UK, at Cova de Sant Ignasi in Manresa, Spain, and at the Jesuit School of Theology at the Santa Clara University where he earned a Master’s of Divinity with a focus in scripture and spirituality. He holds a Ph.D. in educational policy, organization, measurement, and evaluation from the University of California, Berkeley. He served as lecturer and the Director of the University Academy at the University of San Francisco, and as an instructor of Urban Education at SCU. Fleming is a member of the National Board of the Ignatian Volunteer Corps, currently serves on the Board of Trustees of St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia and previously served on the Boards of Nativity Prep Boston and Boston College High School.

Brad Hamrlik has served as a spiritual director since 2004 while earning his Certificate in Spiritual Direction at Loyola University in Chicago as a Jesuit in formation. He made the 30-day Silent Retreat form of the Spiritual Exercises and has led others through the 19th Annotation Retreat in Everyday Life form. Brad has served Ignatius House as a member of the Board of Directors. He also co-directed the Contemplative Leaders in Action program for young adults through Ignatius House. As a young adult “seeker”, Brad experienced God in many ways; but only after beginning spiritual direction with Sr. Pat Thompson did he begin to communicate with God in a two-way dialogue. “In all my Catholic upbringing, I never learned how to develop an actual relationship with God—I learned that from Sr. Pat and all the wonderful Jesuits I have encountered, as well as from all the beautiful lay folks dedicated to this ministry.” Brad is open to working with anyone seeking a deeper relationship with God. He has experience working with young adults; former, prospective, and current religious; and those in recovery. Brad lives in Roswell with his wife, two children, and two dogs. He enjoys sailing and nature.

Julia Maloney is a native of Georgia. She has been a Registered Nurse for 37 years and currently works with Impaired Professionals who are in recovery. Julia is a graduate of Kennesaw State University with her Nursing Degree and Spring Hill College with a certificate in Spiritual Direction. As a Lay Cistercian from The Monastery of our Lady of the Holy Spirit, Julia offers spiritual direction for women who come to the monastery to work their steps in Alcoholic Anonymous, and her gift is the Fifth Step. She enjoys teaching about liturgy, prayer, and Ignatian Spirituality. She teaches Christian Mindfulness practices, forms of prayer and can also be found leading nature walks and pollinator counts. Julia’s home is a pollinator habitat, a monarch way station, and a certified Audubon Bird Sanctuary. She gardens with native plants to support the butterflies and other wildlife who find respite on her property. Julia finds God in the ordinary and lives close to nature, often sharing with others all the tiny, amazing ways God has created us to live well with nature.
